Rethinking the Car Showroom for the Modern Buyer
Greater Group partnered with Macquarie Leasing to design and deliver Motome — the physical retail expression of its digital car purchasing and finance platform. Blending automotive cues, digital innovation and hospitality-inspired comfort, the space bridges online research and in-person consultation within one integrated environment.
Rethinking the Traditional Dealership
The way people buy cars had changed, but the showroom had not. Customers were already researching online, comparing models across brands and exploring finance before visiting a dealership. Motome set out to bring those behaviours into the physical experience, making car buying more accessible and easier to navigate for a broader range of customers.
The brief was to create an environment where customers could move naturally between physical product, digital research and expert advice. Traditional shopfront glazing was removed to blur the boundary with the shopping centre, creating a more open and approachable format that encouraged customers to walk in and explore rather than commit to a conventional dealership visit.
Build Around the Buying Journey
Greater Group designed the store around the customer journey rather than the number of cars it could display. Featured vehicles provide the physical experience, while technology extends the range beyond the floor. Working with Watch This Space, the team integrated augmented reality and the Converge platform, allowing customers to explore vehicle features, compare models across brands, view content and move directly into test drives, quotes and finance enquiries.
The experience could also move between channels. Customers could transfer their selections to their own device and continue researching at home, while lounge and consultation spaces supported more detailed conversations in store. Residential and hospitality cues replaced the harder language of a traditional dealership, creating a more comfortable setting for what is typically a complex, high-consideration purchase.
A Car Showroom That Extends Beyond the Store
Motome brought the fragmented stages of car buying into one experience. Customers could see a vehicle, compare alternatives across brands, explore finance, speak with an expert and continue their research at home, connecting the physical and digital journey rather than treating them as separate channels.
The self-discovery zone, display vehicles and digital tools also remained accessible after staffed hours, allowing the store to keep working even when the team was not there. The result was a more open and flexible approach to automotive retail, built around how customers buy cars rather than how dealerships traditionally sell them.
