Turning the Players’ Race Into an Immersive Digital Experience
Transform a Functional Passage Into Part of the Event
Greater Group, through our specialist hospitality division TableFive, worked with the Melbourne Cricket Club to transform the Players’ Race at the MCG through an integrated digital installation. The race forms the transition between the stadium’s internal areas and the field of play, giving the project a unique position within the sequence of arriving at the arena.
The brief focused on making that transition more immersive. The existing passage provided a contained environment for digital content, with the floor and walls becoming active surfaces that could change the character of the space as players and guests move through it.
Wrap the Journey in Digital Content
Greater Group developed the spatial design and documentation in collaboration with Big Screen Video, integrating LED technology across the floor and walls of the race. The installation creates a continuous digital environment, surrounding people with moving imagery, colour and content as they travel through the passage.
The physical environment was planned around the digital installation, coordinating the LED surfaces with the proportions and movement through the race. Content can activate the full passage as a connected visual sequence, using the length of the space to build anticipation on the approach to the field.
A Digital Threshold to the MCG
The Players’ Race turns the journey to the field into a defined part of the MCG experience. LED flooring and walls transform the passage through light, movement and digital content, creating an immersive transition immediately before entering the arena.
The installation also gives the MCG a programmable environment that can respond to different events and content requirements. The Players’ Race becomes a digital threshold between the internal stadium and the field of play, adding another layer of theatre to one of the most significant transitions within the venue.
