01 Project Brief

Refresh the AFL Members’ Premier Dining Space

Greater Group, through our specialist hospitality division TableFive, was engaged to refurbish the AFL Dining Room on Level 2 of the MCG’s Shane Warne Stand. The largest hospitality space within the stand, the room accommodates up to 400 guests for seated functions and operates across match-day dining, bar service and corporate events.

The existing room included two bars that needed to remain in place, making their operation a key part of the redesign. Greater Group focused on improving bar functionality during peak service periods, reorganising the dining environment and creating a warmer setting suited to the scale and character of the room.

02 Our Approach

Rework the Bars and Reframe the Dining Room

Greater Group reworked the two existing bars to improve service during high-volume periods, with the wider floor plan organised to support large seated functions and clear movement throughout the room. Custom banquette seating and dining furniture establish defined areas within the large footprint, with flexible table planning supporting different event formats.

The interior draws on the character of a contemporary Melbourne bar. Dark indigo blue and terracotta are combined with black timber panelling, Arabescato Vagli marble, light herringbone flooring and bespoke tartan carpet. Accent lighting to the bars and existing columns brings warmth to the room, with custom food stations supporting live service during larger functions.

03 Project Outcome

A Renewed Dining and Events Venue at the MCG

The refurbishment gives the AFL Dining Room a clearer hospitality identity and an improved operational layout. Reworked bars support peak service, banquette seating structures the dining floor, and the flexible configuration allows the room to accommodate large seated dinners, match-day hospitality and corporate functions.

The renewed AFL Dining Room has become an important part of the MCG’s events offer, with its 400-person seated capacity, views across the ground and integrated food and beverage service supporting functions throughout the year. The wider refurbishment of the MCG’s event spaces generated increased demand, with MCG Events reporting more than 1,500 additional guests across the newly refurbished spaces following their reopening.
