Bringing Malaysian Identity Into Travel Retail at KLIA2
Create a Duty-Free Experience With a Sense of Place
KLIA2 called for a duty-free environment with a stronger connection to its Malaysian setting. Within an international airport shaped by global brands and familiar travel retail conventions, the design needed to establish a recognisable sense of place while supporting the scale, movement and operational requirements of a major transit environment.
The store needed to create a strong visual presence across the terminal, with clear circulation and category visibility for passengers moving through at different speeds.
Express Malaysia Through Pattern and Movement
Greater Group translated the “Rhythm of the Future” theme into the physical retail environment, drawing on the diversity and energy of Malaysian culture through pattern, repetition, movement and sequence. These elements are integrated into the architecture and spatial experience, giving the store a contemporary expression connected to its location.
The design was developed through detailed 3D visualisation, resolving the spatial experience, materials, lighting and architectural elements as a complete environment. This created a clear reference for the subsequent delivery team and helped maintain the intended design language through to the finished store.
A Duty-Free Experience Grounded in Malaysia
KLIA2 brings a clear sense of place to Heinemann’s duty-free environment, using pattern, movement and architectural rhythm to create an experience connected to its Malaysian setting. The design gives the store a distinctive identity within the terminal while maintaining the clarity and flow required of a high-traffic travel retail environment.
The result is a contemporary expression of Malaysia designed for an international audience, giving travellers an immediate connection to place as part of their journey through KLIA2.
