The First Store Is the Test

LSKD had commissioned a new retail direction and needed the first store built to it. Takapuna was an existing tenancy rather than a shell, carrying walls, lighting and services from its previous occupant, and the brief covered the full range the format was meant to hold, including the retail floor, a community area, fitting rooms, a kitchenette and back of house. The challenge was to resolve the format completely enough that the stores after it could be built from what it established, without that resolution slowing the one store that had to open first.

02 Our Approach

Building the Kit While Building the Store

Greater Group delivered Takapuna through design, build and project management, developing the fixture set and the layout core in the same pass as the store itself. The joinery, the point-of-sale position, the community area and the fitting zone were drawn as items that would be issued again rather than as solutions to this tenancy, which is why they carry item references that later stores still quote.

The existing tenancy shaped the method rather than the outcome. Walls were removed to open the plan, the existing timber floor was retained and made good, and services were re-routed into the new layout, so the investment concentrated on the elements that define the format instead of on rebuilding a shell that was already sound.

A Concept That Became a Kit of Parts

Takapuna transformed LSKD’s new retail direction into a proven, repeatable system for growth. The store established the fixture kit, planning principles and delivery standards that became the foundation for subsequent locations across New Zealand and Australia.

With the core decisions resolved, each new store could focus on adapting to its tenancy rather than redesigning the concept, accelerating rollout, improving cost certainty and maintaining a consistent LSKD experience as the network expanded.
