Piloting a New Visual Merchandising Concept for Matahari
Rethinking the Multi-Category Shopping Experience
Supermall Karawaci was the pilot for a new visual merchandising concept for Matahari’s multi-category store format. Greater Group was engaged to explore how clearer zoning, product presentation and visual cues could give greater structure to a department store environment spanning multiple categories and brands.
The pilot provided a live retail environment in which to develop the relationship between categories, circulation and merchandising. The focus extended from the overall organisation of the floor through to how customers encounter and understand product as they move between departments.
Create a Clearer Visual Hierarchy
Greater Group developed the concept around the way customers read the store. Category zoning established a clear structure across the floor, supported by visual merchandising that signalled different departments and created stronger relationships between circulation and product.
The merchandising approach considered presentation at every level, from wall displays through to tables and other fixtures, with flexibility built in for changing product ranges. The system was documented as a coherent set of principles that could be assessed through the pilot and inform Matahari’s approach to future multi-category environments.
A Live Test for a New Merchandising Direction
Supermall Karawaci brought Matahari’s new visual merchandising direction into a live store for the first time, allowing the zoning, category hierarchy and product presentation to be experienced together on the trading floor.
The project gave Matahari a practical demonstration of how a more structured merchandising approach could improve the organisation and legibility of its multi-category format, establishing a foundation for the continued development of its retail environments.
