Consistency Across an Uneven Estate
Consistency Across an Uneven Estate
ANZ’s branch network spans fundamentally different environments, from major metropolitan centres such as Martin Place and Bondi Junction to regional locations including Bowral, Maryborough and Rockhampton. Heritage buildings, shopping-centre tenancies and main-street sites all bring different landlords, servicing conditions and physical constraints.
Banking introduces another layer of complexity. Security, cash handling, accessibility and ATM integration all affect the plan before the customer experience is considered, while many projects also need to be delivered around operating branches. The challenge is therefore not simply to repeat a store design, but to maintain one standard across sites that rarely resemble one another.
Maintain the Standard, Then Apply It
The programme is underpinned by the ANZ Branch Standards Manual, which Greater Group maintains across architectural detailing, services, signage and wayfinding. Individual component standards are also managed centrally, allowing each branch to start with an established set of technical and customer-facing decisions rather than resolving them again on every project.
Greater Group then adapts those standards to the realities of each site through design, procurement and build. Because the same team works repeatedly across the network, solutions developed on one branch can inform the next and, where appropriate, be incorporated back into the standards themselves. Smaller interventions such as ATM footprints, planters and fixture upgrades are handled through the same programme, helping keep existing branches current without requiring complete refits.
A Network That Improves as It Rolls Out
Greater Group has delivered more than sixty-five branches across metropolitan and regional Australia, including Martin Place, World Square, George Street, North Sydney, Bondi Junction, Hurstville, Penrith, Liverpool, Rouse Hill, Figtree, Bowral, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Indooroopilly, Burnie, Townsville, Sunbury and Belconnen.
The strength of the programme is not that every branch looks identical. It is that each one draws from the same evolving standard, while the experience gained through delivery continuously improves that standard for the next location. That creates consistency across the national estate without ignoring the realities of each individual site.
