Putting the Consultation at the Centre of the Showroom
Designing Around How Diamonds Are Bought
Melbourne was the first Diamond Exchange showroom and established the foundation for the brand’s Australian retail experience. Rather than treating the space as a conventional jewellery store, the brief centred on the way customers actually make a diamond purchase: through conversation, comparison and specialist advice.
The showroom therefore needed to feel private and considered while still being approachable. Consultation areas, product presentation and customer comfort were prioritised, while the operational requirements of the business needed to remain discreetly integrated behind the retail experience.
Make Consultation the Retail Experience
Greater Group structured the showroom around seated consultation rather than conventional display density. Product is presented selectively, allowing customers and specialists to focus on individual stones and settings in a more personal environment rather than navigating rows of display cases.
Warm timber, illuminated display niches, upholstered seating and controlled lighting create a softer setting for a high-value purchase, while operational and administration areas are positioned discreetly behind the customer-facing space. The result gives the best parts of the tenancy to the showroom experience while keeping the business highly functional behind it.
A New Model for the Diamond Exchange Showroom
The Melbourne flagship established a more consultation-led approach to jewellery retail for Diamond Exchange, placing conversation and specialist service ahead of conventional product density. The environment supports a slower and more personal buying journey, with the physical space reinforcing the trust and expertise required for a high-value purchase.
More importantly, Melbourne became the starting point for the wider relationship. The principles established here were later taken into the Sydney flagship, where the same customer-led thinking was reinterpreted within the very different context of a protected heritage building.
