Beyond the Mall: adidas Malaysia's First Home of Originals
An Originals Home Built for Its Neighbourhood
adidas appointed Greater Group to design a flagship Originals environment at The Campus, Ampang, a lifestyle development built around sport, style and community and defined by its outlook over an active playing field. This was adidas Malaysia’s first store to sit outside a conventional mall, which changed the requirement fundamentally: the store needed to read as an extension of its neighbourhood rather than as a retail box placed within it.
The brief called for an environment where footwear, apparel and culture meet, with the Originals position of “always been, always original” built into the room rather than applied to it. The tenancy itself set the spatial problem, being long and dual-entrance, requiring a layout that reads clearly from either end, balances footwear against apparel, and makes genuine provision for community use.
Raw Materiality, Originals Codes, Local Grounding
Greater Group developed the store around an intentionally unfinished industrial language, using exposed concrete, visible ceiling services and a combination of polished and patterned floors as a deliberate foil to the precision of the product. Against that backdrop the Originals codes carry the narrative: an illuminated Trefoil, a saturated Originals blue applied across display tables, cushions and acrylic plinths, and a neon “always been, always original” line anchoring the community zone.
Zoning resolves the dual-entrance condition, guiding the journey through LED-lit footwear walls, apparel rails and a dedicated T-Shirt Wall, a centre-stage Launch Display, and a Made For You personalisation counter. Local grounding was treated as structural rather than decorative: breeze-block plinths function as both seating and display, and a Malaysian tile-pattern rug in Originals blue signals a store made for Ampang rather than adapted into it.
A Neighbourhood Destination
The completed design delivers a flexible, hard-wearing Originals environment that performs as strongly for community as it does for commerce. Its clearest expression is the community lounge at the rear of the store, where breeze-block tiered seating sits beneath the neon tagline and is framed by a window onto the playing fields, converting what would conventionally be the least valuable part of a tenancy into a place to gather, linger and watch the game.
The result reads as authentically Originals, raw where it should be and refined where it counts, and rooted in its Ampang setting. It also functions as a repeatable blueprint for community-first Originals retail across the market.
