An Airport Bar As A Destination Before Departure
A contemporary take on the traditional sports bar was required for a prime runway-view site in the International Terminal. The brief called for a connected two-level layout with a mezzanine and stairs, broad appeal for international travellers, and strong New Zealand identity cues. Large feature screens, clear circulation, and planning that manages queues without disrupting concourse flow were essential.
Multi-storey and Zoning
A two-level planning solution was developed, with the mezzanine and stairs used to expand seating while keeping views to the airstrip open. Fixing details were engineered to reduce floor obstruction and protect sightlines in the high-volume space. Zoning was arranged to separate dining, bar service, and screen-focused viewing, supporting efficient queuing and smoother fit-out delivery.
Runway-facing Destination Bar
The result strengthens Auckland Airport’s refreshed F&B offer with increased seating capacity supporting peak periods, while large-format screens support entertainment and dwell time. The project was recognised with a Silver Melbourne Design Award in 2020, celebrating its 450 sqm two-level design featuring a mezzanine, sculptural curved staircase and a dramatic 6-metre-high LED screen.
