Nature-Led Airport Café Design at Auckland International

greater group delivered Aroha Cafe & Bar at Auckland International Airport with Emirates Leisure Retail (ELR). Inspired by New Zealand’s land, sea, and sky, the venue blends contemporary urban cues with a calm, premium feel. Zoning, feature architecture, and planted elements support high-traffic dining before departure.

01 - Project Brief

Land, Sea & Sky

A fresh, modern, urban café concept was required while still aligning with the airport’s Land, Sea, Sky theme. The tenancy needed strong presence within a 9-metre-high volume with full-height glazing. Clear zoning was also required to support servery queuing and seating, while maintaining a distinct identity within the wider food court environment.

02 - Our Approach

Portal And Canopy Forms

A 6.3m portal was introduced and finished in layered blue and green hues to reference Auckland’s surrounding sounds and bays. Timber arches were extended from the portal to evoke tree canopies and to define queuing and seating zones. Bespoke black linear lighting beams were integrated along the arches — allowing a planted canopy to be supported and highlighted.

03 - Project Outcome

A Calm Pre-Flight Retreat

The venue delivers a relaxed dining experience that feels distinctly local while operating smoothly in a high-traffic terminal. The portal and arch language creates strong visibility, while clear zoning supports efficient service and comfortable dwell. A biophilic interior layer and controlled materials palette reinforce a premium airport café design experience before departure.

Tree Arches With Plant Canopy

Tree-arch forms are used to create a signature identity while shaping practical zones for queuing and seating. A planted canopy is supported by integrated lighting beams, adding softness and atmosphere without clutter. The result is a distinctive F&B fit-out moment that connects the venue back to New Zealand’s landscape.
